    Funny! I say :)

Today I read that the Swedish-speaking minority in Finland is upset at Finland's attempts to "Finlandize Finland." What? OK, so perhaps 5% of the population in Finland speaks Swedish, but why are they so angry that the country of Finland speaks...Finnish?

    Happy Winter!

Is Swedish an Official Language in Finland?
What I mean is, does government do business in Finnish? What language is in Finnish Statutes and Codes and Law and that sort of stuff? When the President speaks in The House, what language is spoken?

Well?. until about 200 years ago Finland was a part of Sweden. It was then taken over by Russia. The Swedes was mostly in the ruling class. The Swedish still has a strong position in Finland despite the fact that they are a small minority in most areas. In a county with more than 10% minority all public service has to available in the minority language too. In most cases that is Swedish. But on Åland the Swedish majority in more than 90% so Åland is ?fully Swedish?. All Swedish major newspapers are sold at Åland, and the TV is mostly from Sweden.

Nah, he refuses to learn the civilized tongue, just keep on saying 'da' and 'perkele' a lot when I try to enlighten him :D:D:D

You see that I don't even count the times when he starts to sing this

OTOH, I have not been able to learn Finnish from him, so I guess I am as bad myself ;)

Swedish is mandatory (was at least, maybe still, beats me) in schools from 7th grade. Possible to have from 3rd if one wants to. Few schools are still swedish speaking, and we had until recent times even one swedish speaking garrison (though it was "coastal artillery", so it's only sort-of-part of the army...)

But no, I prefer not to try to speak swedish. Reuben don't like it. Even my english is a little so-so (snakie knows)...

So I prefer to use sounds like "grumpf", "argh", "bundolo" and "da"

    :D

That was reminiscent of the Oooowa Oooooowa Ooooowa sounds hollered by [deleted] as they destroy thriving [deleted] while shouting words that do NOT mean anything anymore, words like
    Freedom [Oooooowa]
    Liberty [Oooooowa]
    Justice [Oooooowa]
[okay, those words aren';t in that song - there are FUNNER words, like Bombs, Rockets, Bursting, Perilous, Foe, Havoc, Battle, Blood, Pollution, Slave]

It was only marginally more annoying than the song it mocked.

I like "Stars And Stripes Forever" the lyrics are ignored, for some reason.

They aren't as horribly and amateurishly written as Star Bungled Spanner's lyrics...

But still contains those newspeak words

[holy crap, there is TOO MUCH WAR in those songs, what the fuck gives?????]

Let martial note in triumph float
And liberty extend its mighty hand
A flag appears 'mid thunderous cheers,
The banner of the Western land.
The emblem of the brave and true
    Its folds protect no tyrant crew;
The red and white and starry blue
    Is freedom's shield and hope.

Other nations may deem their flags the best
And cheer them with fervid elation
But the flag of the North and South and West
Is the flag of flags, the flag of Freedom's nation.

Hurrah for the flag of the free!
May it wave as our standard forever,
The gem of the land and the sea,
    The banner of the right.
    Let despots remember the day
When our fathers with mighty endeavor
Proclaimed as they marched to the fray
That by their might and by their right
    It waves forever.

Let eagle shriek from lofty peak
    The never-ending watchword of our land;
Let summer breeze waft through the trees
The echo of the chorus grand.
Sing out for liberty and light,
Sing out for freedom and the right.
Sing out for Union and its might,
    O patriotic sons.

Other nations may deem their flags the best
And cheer them with fervid elation,
But the flag of the North and South and West
Is the flag of flags, the flag of Freedom's nation.

Hurrah for the flag of the free.
May it wave as our standard forever
The gem of the land and the sea,
    The banner of the right.
    Let despots remember the day
When our fathers with mighty endeavor
Proclaimed as they marched to the fray,
That by their might and by their right
    It waves forever.
