Here the part where I had to laugh most:

"... Mr. Roberts recently sent me a brief but rambling threat advising me to "immediately edit and remove all references to the FH" and informed me that I was most likely unaware of the true nature of what I'd just stepped in. He claimed that "all of it" was being documented and that perhaps "the judge" wouldn't be too hard on me if I "responded." He was also kind enough to ensure me that in spite of his odd grammar, suspect spelling and incoherent composition, this was not a joke. He even called me "pal."

I replied to him privately and we were having a somewhat civil exchange until I pointed out that I write an opinion column and that there had been no endorsement of illegal activity, only observation and speculation on it. I mentioned things like due process, Freedom of Information and the 1st Amendment, and that his sugestion (well, that's how he spells it) that I attempt to cover my tracks in order to save my skin would presuppose an admission of ill intent where in fact there was none.

Roberts went ballistic. His Appearance Generator short-circuited and he started ranting and raving about the "protection of children" and the lost innocence of many fine WarBirds-loving young Americans who might read my "garbage" and be tempted to log in to FreeHost, risking the false possibility of being identified by iEN and banned for life. He beeped and squeaked about freedom and responsibility and basically made it sound as if I'd not only given out the name, address and phone number of an AIDS-infected, gun dealing crack whore, but driven a bunch of kids down to see her and forced them to partake. The transformation from reasonable to rabid was awesome and dramatic, to say the least. ..."

Re: Rant Rave: Don't read this

Want to know the really shitty part of this whole thing....

Despite who much you pay for software, most programs do not, and will never, belong to the purchaser. They remain the property of the programmer. Read the EULA on most software, and you soon find out you only purchase the right to use the software, similar to the way that you don't actually purchase music or movies. I reckon it sucks. It literally gives the owner of the intellectual property the power to tell you to stop using it, without giving your money back.

The part that really pisses me off, is that the programmer has very little responsibilty if the software :UU: your PC, and they are not required to give any support for the product.

    Regards, Oz
