recent military exercises in Poland, where part of the legend was the destruction of the baltic fleet and capture of the kaliningrad region, was the last straw.

 

The main cause (as i'm informed by russian news) of purging (not by Putin, but by Shoigu) was cheating/eyewash with reports on sailor's comfort in barracks:

Some time ago the was an accident with old barrack in Omsk - it was self-destroyed- several soldiers were killed under debris.
During last few years our government spend a lot of money to improve soldier's living conditions in barracks.
After that accident, sure, our MinOfDef ruled to check every barrack and report on it thus so to let government to provide additional funding. Those admirals have cheated with saying 'it's all ok', but inspection uncovered many problems.
