    Gin Blossoms rule:

    "Found Out About You"

They're kind of similar to Toad The Wet Sprocket. (This band no longer exists, unfortunately.)

These groups have The Sound. (Just like Tom Petty & the Heartbreakers.)

Thanks for the heads up! Just checked them out; they are not jangly, but rather towards that new wave-ish, punk-ish style, kind of like Split Enz.

Yes, they started in '83 and blew-up in '93..... I remembered just a few of their songs. 415 music was an old San Francisco private lable that faded-out or got bought-out...can't remember. They were around when Romeo Void started..

A few others that might be near or around that "one true sound" : Old 97's The Blasters, The Thunderbirds....

Tom Petty & Heartbreakers is a hard act to follow

Oh... do you know/remember The Specials? Nick Lowe?

Some bands have it, some don't :)

That Gin Blossoms's stuff was good -- and I know about Gin Blossoms in real life :)

I have some good '90s band refs, but I was mostly tied to live-in ladies during that time, so I wasn't able to explore as much. I still prefer the '80s, when I was a carefree student and was able to go wild.

I still think "Man in the Box" was one of the greatest works from the '90s.

Ah, to give it all up, and die in the dark star... If you ever meet a pretty, artsy lady at some party, from the Village who tells you that a certain high is better than sex, my advice is that you ignore her. Especially if it involves needles.

She Sells Sanctuary, The Cult. First song that ever got me onto a club dancefloor!

    Smiths were awesome...

'So I broke into the palace
With a sponge and a rusty spanner
She said "Eh, I know you and you cannot sing"
I said "That's nothing - you should hear me play piano"'

I remember a night at a club about 20 years ago, when I was young and still relevant to the club world. There was a lobby, and the inside of the windowed lobby area was laden with condensed water, 'cause it was Winter. I remember drawing a Bubble Man there with my right hand's forefinger...

Had a deal with that club: all of my beer was free, hehe!

    Ah, memories :)

Cobain the clown was a mere turd!

    Five Days In May

I really like the music threads here. There is a lot of good stuff I haven't heard of until someone shows me and I LIKE THAT! Folk music is Auf Der Volk and best is always that which is played and you exclaim, "This is SO GOOD! Why haven't I heard it before?"
Music threads, they are off topic, but so much is and I DON'T CARE!!!

    Love them. Madness ruled, too.

John Hiatt also has that great sound.

When mmmmm mmmmm mmmmm came out, it turned my head. No bass-baritones can usually sing proper rock music, but that guy somehow managed to do that. I especially liked the tasty bass playing on that album.

Now that Blue Rodeo clip is GREAT! That's the kind of music I really like.

I was hanging out at this fancy place (seemed like a mansion to me, 'cause I'm a poor boy), and was talking to a guitarist from some band. They prolly no longer exist. Anyway, Cobain was there, and his wife showed up. Then began the trouble.

It was in Atlanta, Georgia, I think.

They were fighting about everything. That kind of thing causes panic, especially with the engineer dudes. I can't remember all of it, but the general idea is that that he wanted to be left alone, and not bothered by his wife. I wish I could remember all of it but I cant...

Anyway, Alice in Chains vs. Cobain Clowns is no contest. One found a commercial niche, the other made music :)

I had a crush on her back then: http://www.youtube.com/watch?v=ja8Jz2tmTuc

I remember first seeing this video. It was irritating, fresh and had a well thought out sound. In the verses, the loud, dry drums and the filtered, spoken lyrics is in the front, paired with the light singing in the background. Then in the refrain, it all comes in. Yes it's gross, but sounds good for some reason.
