What do you do at 2000m altitude, on a terrace equivalent to a 7th floor high, made of bars?

    Round a telescope tower?

Having an astro-friend we got to visit the pride of Bulgarian Physics, the 2m mirror optical telescope in the Rhodope mountains.

    Here :super:

Inside it is like a science fiction film,

    from the 70ies!!

the computers are like three wardrobes. on top are spilled thick program code manuals written not in Assembler, but clearly its some predecessor of its.

    they buzz quietly

on the control board blink all kinds of lights. sirens scream. there is a big red button.
there is a clock showing STAR TIME
do you hear that Cpt Kirk?

    Welcome to the space age!

it all works. some guys still leaf through those manuals, still punch perfocards and talk to each other 'make a JMP command to A0F0', still exchange the circuit plates when some of the rack burns.

thats how you fix a telescope round here - .

Sigh... Thats why I came back.

Well that's reason enough to go back.

However would you want to go to an other country's institute?

    Where would that be?

no, i am not astronomer, just visiting a friend

but the atmosphere is very special
it is not only the observatories, it is the same with the streets of every city

it is a fleeting moment though. either they will close it when the meagre budget totally dries up, or they will get money from EU and modernise it. [make it the same as everywhere else in Europe]

I'm thinking about Beirut or Damascus.

I think Thug is right, there is a pack of bad rep dweebs that found out how to wreak their lil' dweeb wrath against people having any conversation that they can't participate or put down.
