Ubuntu is said to be somewhat bloated. That doesn't bother me too much, I have an up-to-date machine and it can handle anything a throw at it [this is a PC, not a mini, I know the difference... hehe].
I like linux Mint becuase it has all the bells and wissles, even if they do not seperate the wheat from the chaff.
I like ubuntu. I don't love it, but I do like it. Live CDs are so cool. I am going to download the above and check it out. I like it best when everything works and works right after a fresh install. I am [brain damaged] lazy.
I have a short list of "Linux distros that work first try." I have a half dozen of those.
If only I could just make my mind up and stick to my decision.
I have a 300mHz Pentium II. It will run some of the linux packages I like, but it is slow and has old hardware and the thing will stutter and spetter. I expect it too. I have a 2gHz 4gB ram thing too with nice vidio and it does everything nicely. But I do not have a machine in between. I guess I should buy a third computer.

My first linux box was called Slackware 95. I am very glad the linux world made better and better software between then and now, because Kernel + installable [modules] + loadable modules + Xsetup left burns all over my body and the scars have yet to heal.........
Things have changed. These days, if linux is mentioned, one needs not explain nearly as much to windows users.....
The stuff that needs explanation is often stuff so intangable I feel the burning again...

    NO, WAIT!!!!:
I am downloading that kiwi right now.
    one word:
    Gnome

Hmmm. I will go ahead anyway, I don't like Gnome too much. But, really, that isn't hard to change....
Except for the fact I can pay attention to written instructions about as well as a guy with two infarctions, one on the right front and one on the left, of my
I forget was I was gonna say.

    NO, WAIT!!!!:
it is done. The iso is burned or deburned or whatever that is called.
Looks like Ubuntu's Gnome desktop. Live CD SHows MMedia out of the box. I still dislike the Gnome. I do like the familiar Ubuntu aspects, it is predictable. No suprises. I have always hated fucking around with drivers [damons or modules or whatever the fuck they called.} and Canonical are stubborn about the liscencing. That is fine, they have to do that. But I don't have to. Seems a good choise if you like Ubuntu but hate being fucked over by the old "It doesn't work!!!!!! I cannot find drivers!"
"Then you should write your own drivers"
    "But I don't know how!"
"Then you are stupid and should just go somewhere and die, you are not worthy."

    3rd PC? Try a netbook!
Actually, I prefer calling them crotchtops. You know, laptops cover our laps.. Tiny laptops (netbooks, like Intel decided to name them) cover our crotches.

I'm sure you thought of something naughty, but you're wrong.

They're portable, light, have much longer battery time, and will let you flood the forum from anywhere.
If you like some Linux distro that boots from pendrives, even better! These things don't have optical drives.

I want one... I'll probably get a crotchtop when the next gen comes out... I just hope hard ons don't interrupt the PC experience.

Don't sell the new technology short.

It just might ENHANCE the PC experience!

Oh, wait, PC stands for Personal computer???

    Nevermind.

To me, the GIU makes all the difference as concerns the various Debians.
I looked over this Kiwi. I have it in a thumbdrive [the thumb thinks it is Linux Mint ( Ubuntu < Debian > ) ]
All the Debians seem to look like relatives in a family. And the DPackage thngies? I like those. Very little head-ache when installing new software - very little headache when UN-installing also.
I am messing around with so many OSes I am learning quite a bit. Portable OSes are a cool idea.... Way better than having to pay money for something and finding out it is incomplete and buggy: I can tolleate the same headaches when I buy professionally made OSes. I am brain damaged and am finding all sorts of little things in this head aren't connected like they used to be. SO a GUI is paramount, for now, until I get better.

I am even getting used to Gnome - haven't a lot of choice, it seems to be everywhere on desktops

Thanks for the tip Loosleif. Kiwi has a lot going for it, it will be nice to see how it matures over time.

[always look twice at the little text that says something like:

Fhy0,1 is about to be nuked. ARE YOU SURE?

Found another one that might come handy:

    Pupwin98

In Puppylinux.org you can find it. Find the instructions and print it out.

You can unzip these files inside win98 and you got puppylinux inside of windows98 !

You have the puppylinux icon on the win desktop. Have something that needs linux drivers, just click on the icon, get drivers.
Also Puppy linux allows you to format hard drives in ANY formate you can want.

That's what my family said to me when I wanted to leave the business and join the army.... then when I was just about to marry this girl... i was told the same thing.... and then when I bought this old sports car.....

    yes, I hear that a lot :D

But seriously, when have you every really needed or used Microsoft support ?

I used 98 and then went to 98SE right away.

All I can remember was getting the explorer service pack upgrades and the other one, DX or AX upgrades that usually came in the high powered video cards for 3D and multimedia.

I think that if you have to rely on Microsoft "support" you are doomed anyway.

I use it every time they find a fuckin' big hole and a virus is already out there exploiting it. Dunno but it sounds like a reasonable thing to do in that circumstance...

I have NEVER trusted nor used a Microsoft anti virus program.

I always use a third party firewall and anti virus software.

where did I say something about an antivirus?
you know what an update is?
you know what a bug fix is?

one thing it isn't is an antivirus
one thing you won't get anywhere else EXCEPT from M$ is a bug fix

Your 14th word is "virus". Answering your question. Now since I never had gotten any viruses therefore I never needed any updates to bugs that never affected me.
I found 98SE pretty bug free.

One of the problems, rather complications of selling equipment with software(especially that has MS OS) is that at some point one must freeze the software and not update.

In my limited experiences we had used 98SE until we needed to revise the whole product. From 98SE it went to WIN2000pro using FAT32. XP was impossible. NT was nearly criminal and Vista was just too silly.
They went to linux/unix/Modula 2. It was not my area of work.
