Fascinating. The guy hits the gavel and people listen. There is no fighting. The man with the stick is the master of ceremonies. It's the same everywhere I swear to God.

"The Masonic gavel is an emblem of authority used by the Master of the lodge to show his executive power over the assemblage by punctuating its actions. In this capacity, order is maintained and a structured outcome to the proceedings is achieved. "

Yes, the monkey has the stick, but the man has the rope in his hand and the rope goes to the monkey's neck.

If he plans on choking his monkey, he's a wanker so to speak. Yes, too easy, but someone had to do it.

Difference is that the orchestra is a voluntary organization and the conductor has earned the position of being the "leader".

Just like the old British officer's swagger stick; a sign of authority, but a sign of authority that has been given by a group of peers on the merit of the officer.

BTW: great ref. for Desmond Morris :znaika:

    um

The conductor is needed in exactly the same way as any other member of the orchestra, it just doesn't work in any other way. Not so for a commanding officer and a lousy private.

Conductors are like condoms. They're boring as hell to use, but you're a lot safer that way.
