You are correct.

In order to make it possible for Hurricanes headed out on long ferrying missions - and thus weighed-down by large drop tanks - to take off from short airfields, the "STOL Hurricane" idea was developed. To provide extra lift, a second wing, which was jettisoned after take off, was added to the plane. The photo shows the Mk.I (s/n L1884) ehich became the prototype. Though tests of the arrangement were succesful, the improvement of the war situation in North Africa virtually eliminated the need for long ferrying missions and the system was never put into actual use.
