Yeah, we gotta meet some time out on your coast (or if you're ever out here). Just got my pop's official records this week from the archives!
True, Eisenhower is rarely even discussed these days. I don't think about his presidential years as being bad. Driving his highways every week I weep (almost, hehe). But I can't help but get angry about how crappy our highways are these days, gotta stop thinking about Autobahns. And you, Dr. Hezekiah, Loose and I are pretty much contemporaries; we remember the late sixties and early seventies (the first serious political discussions I recall concerned the ’72 election and next impeachment of Nixon [I urged caution to my neighbor over the fence]). I remember hearing the AM radio announce Milhouse’s “landslide” in ’72 on the radio. In my elementary school, I had debated for the pro-McGovern side. Guess I always preferred underdogs Now I’m old, irrelevant, but do have a lot of experience as do you. We three may have different histories. I have always had rather naiive expectations of how our society was supposed to be. The world I grew up in was not cynical. My family instilled in me certain fundamental beliefs that my later-learned cynicism has never been able to extinguish. Not religion or spirituality, but a sense of pride about the nation. Yes, grandparents showed up at our house every Fourth of July, and we all walked down to see the parade. Later, as we were older, we marched in the parades. And I’ve got pictures of us kids walking down to Main Street waving little American flags. And some of my grandparents never even spoke English to me! However, all were grateful for the opportunities and safety that this country gave us. I am proud of my ancestry -- but I’m a Yank and proud of it. So yeah, I’m an old fart. My ancestors would consider me a leftist but I’m pretty patriotic. Today in 2012 the USA is struggling again, but it’s nothing compared to the sixties. Our cities aren’t burning now – those were not pleasant times Most of us here still believe in the same fundamentals, esp. the Constitution although interpretations vary. Here I go: • Reinforce federalism • Stop foreign interventions • Uphold our laws as defined. If you don’t like them, go through congress • Enforce equality of opportunity, not outcome • Our borders should be less permeable So you see, I’m a very bad person.
You're right that it isn't simple. Tomorrow (or over next few days) they'll bring it to the UN and make it an "international outrage." Assad will likely be gone elsewhere within a week. He's too young and internationally connected (wealthy) to end up like Mubarek. Well, maybe I'm wrong. But Klintons are the most powerful people in the world now.
Lol "Gangsters don't die, they move to Miami", imho say about 1930-1970. But now Holywood and TV make image Miami- "In Miami, even serial killers fighting crime"
Listen, ah ya shouldn't excuse stupidity by flashing a slogan. Canticles induce trance, do they not? Isn't that what word wooze is for? War On Everything. I remember Only You Can Prevent Forest Fires. That was a cool slogan, and it came from the states, and Canucks used to repeat it to each other too. ANd remember the slogans we repeated to ourselves about litter? But some other slogans are wordwooze n doubletalk n strange unworkable grammer, fighting words. Parot pharase, often spake by folks who haven't thought through what they are sayin, see? Say no to drugs. [Really?] He died for your freedom. The only good commie is a dead commie. [oh come on now] The Utes must go [OH COME ON NOW] The only good mexican is a dead miexican We must repeat slogans again and again and again, even if the international community doesn’t hear our truths
I thought about that and, yep. But a croud is hard to ignore when it is doing that. And people do. And masses are hypnotized. ANd masses do chant. Have you ever chanted?
Thanks, we hope so too. Fort Bragg is where my nephew was stationed. My sister and mom went last weekend to see him off and pick up his car.
