I once answered a stupid kid's simple question [about using Linux] by showing him [he was right here, next to me]] this as an answer:
    https://www.cyberciti.biz/faq/ubuntu-copy-file-command/
I didn't show the link, I showed him the page.
He rolled his eyes and said PFT.
The page instructions are not relevant anymore. But this is the sort of stuff Linux Newbies must endure. The young guy said PFT. He was only about 20, so what does he think he is gonna have to do during his life?
Once your are 30 years of age.... 35? 40 [yeah, sure]?..... things start getting harder and harder to learn.
The young guy is welding pipes right now. Does he think he can weld pipes till he is 70? By that time, he will already have endured divorce number three and the standard use of Parsecs/Y on Traffic Speed road signs. How to use the chip in the forehead.....

I said I am happy to have a OS that few can look at. After five minutes the screen blanks and there needs a password.
I think a cop or a spy [cop?] could look.
I do not think anyone I know could use this PC. Yes, they could look at the browser history, IF THE PC WAS WORKING.
I do not know how to make this PC Fink-Proof.
ANYONE who can find their way in the Linux World MIGHT be able to look, IF THEY HAVE THE USER PASSWORD. They have five minutes. I think some COPs might know how to look at [My linux] all my porn.

I encrypted the home dir of my usb installed puppy linux with a randomly generated 32 character password that I know by heart. No fear of losing the usb.

On the other hand that's why linux is so involving, because you can either join the gang or go your own way, as you like. Both in developing and in using it. And I believe this is as important for people as the actual functioning of the system.

Some years ago I had passwords. They were phone numbers from friends at high-school, in the 70s, and Maiden Names of women I knew and favourite words like Stinky'a real name [Complete with Caps and middle name and the III at the end!] . Stuff that I could discover if I ever lost [and then recovered] my PC [I thought, hoped].
Where was the notebook that had all the hints for passwords?
IN MY TOP DRAWER IN THE KITCHEN? tied to a tree at some bushes nearby?
When I got sick and then recovered, I found I could not remember things like that.
I think, if I fell down right now, and then awoke in a couple weeks I would lose everything too.
The biggest and best difference between then and now is:
My PC is, at boot, Password Protected [as well as a root PW and a screen-saver and a encrypted /home] and is a Linux Box.
And still, if I awoke with faulty memory, like last time, I would lose everything this time too.
I am trying to gain satisfaction knowing that if that happens to me, then the little bastards in my family won't be able to expose me to anyone and I won't be able to either [I won't care].

Ive had good luck with Ubuntu but I fell flat on my face when I had to do a bare handed install of printer/scanner driver. I lost all my Linux books so I had in order to keep the old computer I had to download a legal Win10 and then get screwed again because of a proprietary display driver (NVIDIA) that couldnt do 1400X900 even though in Ubuntu it did it automatically. Sooo after a few days of thrashing the NVIDA webpage I managed to put a few pieces of drivers together to get some 1400X900 working. though it occasionally shits on me for certain type fonts or art work....
Soooo on the hunt for some Ubuntu books before I try again.

I have been using the same 'Distro' for 8 years now. During that time I have gotten used to it's look and feel [Big Talkers call that a 'workflow'].
It looks plain, sort of boring [?], there is nothing flashy, nothing about it catches any attention. It looks, to anyone who comes over to visit [sure, eh? Visitors?], a lot like Windows 95.
Click a mouse, ooooh, look, ya can click the mouse! And so what, some of those visiots will say. MY PC can do that to. I have given up replying with YOUR PC CAN'T DO WHAT MINE CAN, YOU FUCKIN RETARD!
I just shut up. Maybe groan softly.
I do not know anyone, nobody that I visit with, um, friends, neighbours and stuff [visitors? HAHAHA] can even get the Home Screen to display. If I let em see it, then they can click some things. After they try thins and are disappointed, or that, the screen blanks and they need a password to even look at anything. BIG DEAL EH?
    That is the user password.
The Root password and the HDD Encryption and that other thing, I am too lazy to look up it's name [is in the hardware..... I think], on boot, those are even more.
I don't mind navigating the hoops and loops I have to follow [oh, sometimes I mind, never-mind], getting used to it. I am bothered by the every five minuted screen goes dark thing. BUT My user password is not difficult [Ya only have three chances and if ya can't get it right, you make it reboot.......].
That is too complicated, even for me. I am bothered by it, lots.
Thing to do is to do that stuff right, get it all right, and then, look at the desktop and click stuff.
I have not, face-to-face, met anyone who can handle this thing, and it is assembled by a half-educated gardener / library-educated guy. I don't hack and I don't know enough to hack.
One day I might have a display that does NOT blank itself. Maybe I will make it do that every fifteen minutes or half hour?
I have a IPhone and a IPad. I don't know what to say about those things, they are like aliens, from mars. So strange to me. I think those are very dangerous if I ever lose one of em. I don't know what could happen, would happen, can happen, what has happened. Mum said, JUST MAKE SURE YOU NEVER DO ANYTHING ILLEGAL, THAT IS SIMPLE!
[I don't say anything sarcastic to her, that is my Old Mum]

Well Hez.. good for you... ( I think..) You probably have more time than I do. In my old age I still got too much to do that if it doesn't work I have to go to books rather than test one step at a time and figure it out. I just have to leave it for another time and grab something that works.

There's a great line from the old movie: "Our man in Havanna" The chief of police answers the question to Alec Guinness of why he carries two guns.

"You see the enemies I have don't allow me time to reload.."
