As far as the date of Christmas and New Year is considered - there's no doubt the first one was borrowed from the Roman Dies Sol Invictis... they just changed the subject, making it Dies Natalis Christi. As for New Year - also a Roman convention - makes exactly the same sense as the Prime meridian in Greenwich - there is no reason to make this day special, except for an agreement that it should be so. Dates of larger significance are the winter and summer solstices (20-22 June, 20-23 December) and both equinoxes (19-21 March, most fall on 20th; 21-23 September - with most falling on the 22nd)
We celebrate Epiphany today (the day the three Magi (or wise men) came to bring gifts - gold, frankincense and myrrh - to the newborn Jesus). In other words - another festive celebration that proves just "how fucked up" Christianity is. It celebrates Christ's birth on December, 25th, states (Matthew does) that the Magi came to visit baby Christ on the night he was born (guided by the star - as enacted in Nativity Plays in numerous schools and preschools here)... and celebrates the anniversary of that on January, 6th. Logic. Christian level.
