winter is not for beer its for cognac hmm let me see - my country seems to have only 3 dates this month: 6th, 9th and 22nd of September. Yes, we have too much history.

I meant the same. 22nd is Independence Day. 6th is the day of Unification. (anschluss) BTW it is also the day of my city, because it was the captial of the second state - the one which disappeared. yeah, sounds strange when you think about it. 9th was the most important day until 15 years ago. now half the nation celebrates it, the other mourns it. "Liberation from Fascism". it is not national holiday anymore of course. In other months we have more.

Rakija is vodka made by destilating wine, it's national drink of Serbia and Montenegro (and really kicks, having up to 60% alcohol)... hard to drink it w/o getting almost instantly drunk, but damn, it's good and heats up dramaticly when it's needed.
hm, im afraid its national drink of Bulgaria as well. there seems to be something called rakia on Crete too. and it is made of any kind of fruits you like (although grape rakia is most common). anything rotten you`ve got to throw out after the summer. im fine with about 150ml without getting any drunk i think. but there are all kinds of varieties and % of alcohol, baked, double-baked (dont ask me what is this ). young, matured, gentle, sharp, etc. there is something called parvak (първак) - the first rakia to come out which so strong that AFAIK is used by grannies as medicine spirit (or at least there is saying like that )

But down here our typical alcoholic drink is Cachaça, a destilled drink made from sugar-cane. If you want to try it, the name in other countries are: Schnaps in Germany, Eau de vie in France... not sure if they use this name though, just in case... ask for a brazilian brand. There are several brands, with different dates (old ones are kinda yellowish), tastes and acohol in it (varies between 38 and 54° GL depending on the brand). Caipirinha is a drink you make using cachaça... tastes really good. you do it with some smashed lemon slices with sugar and ice cubes, then throw in the cachaça. AFAIK you can find brands like 51 and Velho Barreiro in Germany, not sure if around there also. But from what I heard they are kind of expensive there (on the other hand they are REALLYcheep here).
