Hi

i consider lag and packet loss the most biggest problem in a online game. lag and warps due to packet loss can occur separatly, but usually a connect with lot of lag has also more packet losses.

For example. You´re chased by someone with a lot of lag. You see him at D8 and you feel almost safe, he sees you at D4-5 and opens fire. Or he passes you in a HO attack and you see him aiming at a point where you ve been 1-2 seconds ago. You feel safe and suddenly BANG BANG BANG dead. This is odd

The FH Launcher already has a pingtest included. Isn´t it possible to deny access to FH if the connect is too bad, this means the launcher makes 5 pings and when the mean ping is too bad:" Sry, try later your connect is too bad today"? In ping status bars, a ping of 400ms isn´t "green" anymore, it´s deep yellow.

This way we could trust that the opponent has an acceptable connect and some very strange phenomens will end, i´m sure.

what do you think?

I have in-game ping about 450ms from CZ through proxy. From me to proxy about 200ms. Should I leave? :)

i have a better idea!
how about denying access of all who have ping lower than 400ms? that way, we know all of us have lag, and we can trust others that the game will be fair. :dark:

Quake players try to have pings below 100ms, even below 50ms. I proposed 400ms - so don´t exaggerate. I´m well aware that this is an international server.

I don´t know why you have such a bad ping from cz. I refer to the ping that can be viewed in the game with the " .pingtest "command. It seems equal to the ping you get when you open a dos-window and enter " ping 195.208.34.5 ".

Actually i thought myself: Here from germany i get with a dial-up modem a ~280ms ping. I know that the way from me to the provider needs already ~120ms. That means 160ms from my provider to russia, and i think with another 140ms you come quite far in the net. When you have a cable or DSL connect you can be even farer away.

Question on pingtimes

I live in northern canada, and I get pings below 200 ((most time)), but, people in europe have pings they say over 400, How come im so far away, and good pings ((btw, I've never been told I warped, and it being true))

Does it have to do with having a cable modem with 4megabits connection??

Following my "DOS" ping to FH server directly, and to nearest proxy through dialup (52kbit connection speed):

Code:
Pinging cndr.chph.ras.ru [195.208.34.5] with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 195.208.34.5: bytes=32 time=240ms TTL=241

Reply from 195.208.34.5: bytes=32 time=231ms TTL=241

Ping statistics for 195.208.34.5:

Approximate round trip times in milli-seconds:
Minimum = 231ms, Maximum =  240ms, Average =  235ms

D:\Program Files\Far>ping 217.23.130.21

Pinging 217.23.130.21 with 32 bytes of data:

Reply from 217.23.130.21: bytes=32 time=200ms TTL=53
Reply from 217.23.130.21: bytes=32 time=210ms TTL=53

And it's the best ping I found (tried 5 or 6 providers) in CZ. As I said before, ".pingtest" return me ~480ms.

i can´t understand your problem, archer, your ping looks ok. I found out that in flight the ping gets worse btw, check the ping in the tower. I assume that the sent and received packages in flight make the ping looks worse than it is (This actually happens in tower, too, but not as bad)

gahis confirms my opinion, even from oversea good pings are possible. 400ms is a level where it becomes simply too bad imo. Where it IS already too bad.

i heard that sometimes packets go from europe to the USA, and only then to FH.

hell.. even I get better pings than archer... and im in brazil! lol
mine is around 290-350 in FHL. i use ADSL 256kbps.

.pingtest gives larger ping results, with unknown iENemy logics. FHL is handmade by aike and farid. DOS is TCP/IP protocol

niklas, ping is dynamic idea, not static, and even YOU can have ping longer than 400ms in the certain moments of the game.

i suggest you to stop discussing such limitation ideas.

as for warping and long lags, aike said that he will discard such shooting.

i may ask aike about strict rules on this matter.

i think, there is no such importance for good pings in wb as it is in 'quake', gee, what a luck! i got dizzy, when i once watched a friend playing against humpy-jumpy-bruzzly-fuzzly 'cons' - and he even more complained of his framerate than pings.

1. i think, the difference between what two players (with different pings) see is the difference of both one-way-pings and that should be the same for both. advantage is more by surprise or attack with long ping-summmary, but doesn't matter who got the better?
2. as a question: i thought, wb-helper gives ping-times, '.pingtest' gives roundtrip, which is app. 2-times more?
3. as a question: i thought, beacon means stability (varying pings mean warp-factor), and ping is more to know about the actual net-lag for me?
4. i've been told, that ping mainly depends of routing (and mostly of the number and bandwidth of routing-points). i use two different providers which differ from 80-100 ms one and 180-280 ms the other (when connect is good) from middle-europe
5. also i have personally experienced worse pings with dsl (no fastpath) than isdn, and because i have dsl-flatrate, it depends on my financial resources which ping i play...

my opinion:
i think, it needs good skills for constantly getting advantage from a bad ping...
i fear more a loss of attraction of this fabulous game, when an unknown number of pilots will be excluded from the community because of circumstances out of their influence (warping is another topic).

and:
i am gladly allowed to play here for free and i don't feel like demanding for restrictions against other guests (nor do i think i have the right to)

I get pings around 100ms these days.
.98 and .21 are very close to each other,
maybe .21 slightly better.
The other ips give me 300-800ms. (or worse)

The time of day does affect as well as
the angle of Moonlight falling to
ISP's HQ ;) Some times I get min/ave/ max
60/100/120 and sometimes it is
60/100/1000 <-no typo here

I have two ISPs in use, the one who charges
money is usually better, but sometimes the
no cost one is the best one.

Before .21 and .98 things were a bit worse,
thx to all involved with .98 and .21 :)

All pings with FH launcher, dist. to Moscow
is about 700-800km or 500 miles. ISDN 64k.

You´re right. With the difference that the guy with the bad ping is used to the lag, and know when the other can open fire, while the other one is surprised that the hunter opens fire from a position where it looks unpossible for him to get a hit.

not necessarily. If you fire at a point where the enemy has been 1-2 sec. ago you can achive hits while the enemy has already begun to start an evasive manoevre on his FE. But the action evasive manoevre reaches you very late, so you can still shoot at a "standing target". You ll also have recognized so far that beacon means that the plane keeps the current direction, because no updates reaches you. That means you shoot at a straight flying target - pretty easy. When beacon jumps back green some hit messages are transfered, and suddenly the other one get hit messages though no enemy was behind him.

Warping, mysterious hits and other strange phenomens draw away attention too....

I'm very much AGAINST this idea!

It's the most egoistical idea I've heard so far, even your ping isn't always below 400ms I bet... I would be one of the lucky few, but I can name numerous great pilots that would just have to get bent because someone made up a stupid rule...

Think of all the people farther than Belgium, Germany, Poland, etc etc... for example, the people from Brasil... I mean, even T1 users can have the bad luck to have a ping of 401ms... it's a thing very hard to control...

lame ideas again

oh no!!! lame ideas are striking back!!!
don't you guys have nothing else to discuss about?
restricting the game to people with a bad connection... that sure is lame. I still recall the time when I WAS PAYING TO ICI/iEN to fly with a 1000ms+ ping...
just get used to it... relaaaaxxxx. :mafia:

if you ban people with more than 400ms you may be banishing yourself in the future... keep that in mind...
