Fantasy of a computer animation geek who never read or just ignored any historical account of what really happened. Sad to know that Mictchel died so young though....
Yeah, IL-2 series is pretty amazing. I used to fly it online from IL-2 Original to IL-2 Forgotten Battles, Aces Expansion Pack and few patches. But then the new patches began to increase in size, and since I was only on a 56k modem and had less and less quality time to spend on flightsimming anyway, at some point I stopped updating and thus got left behind - no more online IL-2 for me. Now I'm on DSL since about half a year, but meanwhile Pacific Fighters has appeared, and you'll need to buy it in order to fly online on like 99,999% of the servers on HyperLobby. I didn't yet bother to get it, since offline it was pretty much a cheap shot and half-assed approach (problems with autopilot running your plane into a mountain on time compression, inaccurate maps, important maps completely left out, important ship classes left out, no carrier based torpedo bombers flyable, and the AI having major problems to fly the US B&Zoomers proficiently against the Japanese turners - the Corsairs and Lightnings will engage the Zeros in turnfights etc.) and I didn't want to spend full price on a half-assed expansion only to fly online. But it's really a pretty good series and especially the Online Wars which the community keeps running are excellent. Loss and supply tracking, "dead is dead" per server run (mission), thus no fuckin' kamikaziing or quaking around, professional squads involved, voice coms (if you are in a squad), good fun overall. Now there is a DVD out called something like "IL-2 - The complete Edition" which includes Forgotten Battles, the Ace Expansion pack and Pacific Fighters. I don't neither have the will nor the time anymore to pick it up and return to the IL-2 online community, but for anyone who's interested in trying out IL-2 series I can only recommend it. While there are some weaknesses offline (as with most flightsims nowadays [oh, remember the mid 90s? Good memories, today they don't even come close], especially when it comes to AI and immersion), it excells online. Regards heartc
P.S. Some of the shots in the vid seem pretty arcardy. Especially those head-on instant kills. While the guy is flying a Spit version with 20mm guns there, they are not THAT deadly, at least from my experience. I think he had "easy gunnery" enabled for at least some of those vid shots - to increase the drama factor - which provides "hit bubbles" and more deadly weapon effects for your guns. So don't get fooled by the vid. But it's nicely done.
It reminds me good old WWIIFighters by Jane's (or EAW). Except bit better 3D brings IL2FB nothing new...
I think Microsoft had a WW2 flying game with similar graphics. The Lucasfilms revised SWOTL/ "Swotl over Normandy" or some name like that also had nearly the same kind of animation too. Sometimes looking very realistic and sometimes looking way too cartoonish.
Yes, that was a great game. It would be great game now if only there were a modern graphics update. I kept it on old hard drives along with a lot of the freeware modifications. I had a night version, several special mod. aircraft including a single 50mm cannon 262, the P51K and other bomber versions.
hey i wasnt talkin about il2fb bein great or bad or movie real or not just said its a nice video, with all the transitions, cutscene and camerawork +nice graphics of course
