"We wanted to have one specific date for Saddam so people remember this date to be linked to Saddam's execution and nothing else."

And at the same time they gave a historic day for all those fuckin nutjobs (or terrorists if you will) to have a day to bomb up places ...

Why, he got what he deserved. It had to be done eventually. They could have done it some time later, but what would that have changed?

Past evidence indicates that they don't really need such a pretext to go and blow up some Irakis.

Well, I guess it should have been done right back in '91. That way, the whole pretext of Iraq possessing WMD's wouldn't even have been necessary in the first place. But hey, Iraq did not honor the terms of the surrender in Feb '91. That alone was sufficient reason to invade Iraq, WMD's or not.

P.S. Nevertheless I still think that, on the whole, the invasion was not a particularly good idea.

It doesn't take much to figure out that the killing of Hussein would trigger more violence.

He's got what he desered... and so have it at least 31 others who didn't deserve it at all in Kufa, Iraq. Much more will probably follow.

The ageing dictator could serve as a bargaining card if kept alive. Killing him was nothing but emotionally driven and plain stupid revenge that will only stir the Middle East sh** more.

Well, do you seriously for one second believe that there would not have been any attacks if Saddamn hadn't been executed? Anyway, what bargaining involving Saddam's persona did you have in mind?

Plain and simple, Saddam is now a 'martyr'. If they had kept him, he would have still been incapable of doing any harm. His case was over once he got captured!

He would have had some very interesting things to say, had he been able to open his mouth - but that's just wishful thinking! :D

    And...

No, but killing Saddam is like pouring gasoline onto the flaming ruins that the Middle East has become. It only makes the fire stronger.
