atguard have a successful grasp of services:
tcp firewall, web-filter (cookies, scripts, pop-ups), but out of sales. current versons entered norton package and changed the title. anyways, old version looks to be free, or at least nowhere speaks of money.

personal tiny firewall is new and free soft. it has no web controls, but i hope it's more resistant to modern types of attack.

outpost is another personal firewall that strongly folks reccomend, but i haven't checked it.

zonealarm is some gismo people use too, along with <forgot name> web-filter.

check deja.com with atguard or personal firewall keywords, and you'll find interesting references on topic.

Installed Personal Tiny Firewall. Seems to be running fine (actually I would need someone to test it, any volunteer talk to me in icq).
A firewall to run here must be easy-configurable, as I'm not the only one using this PC...

    Pro & Contra Firewalls

There is a longer thread in the German WB-Forum, started on 9th of April, title: "Proxy and ZoneAlarm"
    ()
about firewalls their usefulness and their limitations. (Sorry only in German)

    However,
the lengthy discussion reveals the outcry of the experts, which rather recommend a floppyrouter with package filter instead of a firewall, be it ZoneAlarm or others. The experts clearly state "to uninstall it because you do not need it".
It does not prevent hacks and or attacks, eats up a lot of resources and gives you troubles over troubles with the online business of yours (gaming for instance). It is completly useless, the firewalls currently on the market are considered "blood-thirsty-barbarians".
If reasonable security is required you should create a router and consult the URLs listed below for further info (both available in English).
    Firewalls:
    (available in English)
    Router:
    (also in English)

I myself have read the above mentioned URLs very carefully and dumped ZoneAlarmPro for good.

You want a "personal firewall" I suggest to use "Tiny Personal Firewall". It was tested good in personal firewall tests.

"Atguard" is also not bad, but too old. It was bought by Symantec and they integrated it into "Norton Personal Firewall", but this can't be used in networks afaik and is not free ;)

I f you want it easy, you can use "Black Ice Defender". This works as intrusion detection system. So it doesn't prevend trojans from dialing home, but I liked it anyway.

Personally I'm using a linux router. It's a floppy only easy (trust me) to configure very stable system running on an old (11 years) 486DX33 with 20MB RAM and no hard disk. This is much more secure solution even in default configuration than any personal firewall.

    Yeah, you need a firewall!

I use it too under Win98SE and Win2k and dont wanna miss it anymore.
Defended many hacking (some people know the holes in the M$-OS's) trials then i was doing some IRC stuff.

Is this the "one disk linux & firewall" distribution, described in the c't?
If yes, how are your experiences?
