A P-40 has been found in the desert by a Polish oil company worker (Poland owns the sahara?), serial number shows it was flown by famous Canadian pilot Stocky Edwards, and later by RAF pilot Dennis Copping. P40 found story and pics
He was not shot down "On June 28, Flt Sgt Copping and another airman were ordered to fly two damaged Kittyhawks from one British airbase in northern Egypt to another for repair, but he lost his bearings, went off course and was never seen again." http://www.a1social.com/2012/05/fir...ter-plane-found-crashed-in-the-sahara-desert/
Wow, the level of preservation is amazing! As my junior high-school teacher used to say, aluminum oxidizes and that's a good thing unless you're fancy and well capitalized Never polish (the verb) away what amounts to a bit of self-protection. This is the only one I've seen close-up.
God-damned rag heads already looting the remains. What happened to the second plane? I can't believe the second plane didn't radio for help. Where was this plane in relationship to where the two bases were? Not the slightest shred of investigative reporting, lazy bastards... Poor s.o.b. pilot.. what a way to go...
