Jean Michel Jarré at his mega outdoor concerts, he had a 'laser synth organ' but it's the same idea, although he broke a beam of light to play a note. If the light was not only for fun, I dunno. (I don't listen to much synth music, never mind fine details that might be missing from my recollection ) I hope the clips was from someone usin a theremin device, else I have just educated you lot for naught
