Re: НВ Спутник! Yes, it is a very significant anniversary! When I first began to study Russian, the audio tapes that accompanied were recorded immediately after that event. They were so hastily recorded (in New York, I guessed), in fact, that I could distinctly hear trucks driving in the background. The Sputnik was a mainline, a "shot in the arm" for the USA (if anyone knows about Afghanistan, hehe). Millions were suddenly poured into research, as we thought that we were far behind Soviet technology. We were not, but we had different priorities. Now we are screwed. Man, the Soviet Union was in Afghanistan for ten years. I wonder how long we can stay there. We are f$3ked now.
