Population pressure is what makes people live in tidal flats.
In much of north America and, I hope, south America, we aren't so pressed for living space that we have to built dwellings on tidal flats. Oh, we do. Yep. There is housing in hazardous areas everywhere.
Japanese are amazing. They are going to work around this happening. They have seen a lot worse loss of life in the past. Life is what is important, buildings and machines can always be reclaimed, but a life is a blessing and once it expires, that's it.
I hope for People in Japan. An amazing people.

    Losses aren't just life:
    ON OR OFF.

People are effected when terrible things happen to them.

When the earth moves, so that a person cannot trust the foundation they are standing on, a person can instantly learn to distrust what supports them, holds them aloft.
Tsunami? That is a great and terrible force also. Similar effect on people's trust in the firmament beneath them and the standing of the towers around them.

Or maybe it's just a consequence of too many people and not enough space?

Ok, maybe 41 persons per squaremile in Finland, but 14 persons per squarekilometers...

How many squares there are in USA or russia in total? :)

I think China, Russia, USA and Canada are all close to the same size.
And, like much of China, Russia, USA and Canada, most of the land is not capable of supporting anyone but nomads and bands of hunter gatherers.

We are a mote in God's eye.

    The bigger problems surface later;

5 nuke plants shut down with coolant leaks and the areas around there are reporting 1,000 time higher background radiation.

Now one plant just experienced an explosion.

On a positive note; the loss of life is "only" a few thousand.

The areas affected have millions of inhabitants. the Japanese are probably the most prepared and disciplined people for such a catastrophe.

( Geeze... my 4,000th posting.. I have got to get a life....)
