Ok, i downloaded TS to try to use it in game, and guess what happened? I managed to damage my win98 to unexpected levels. So after the "virus" incident (got 389 last time i made a scan), Windows media incident (only first version can be loaded in my Pc or it crashes), and all the other things i made to it, i decided i have to format it. So here's my wish: HELP!!!! I mean, what OS you recommend? I won't install linux, for the little i've seen, it would be a suicide I can get winXP or win98. How do i do to avoid that, as soon as i switch my modem, virus start the invasion? What free antivirus you recommend? (amongst those posted by Glas), and last but not least, any other hint to have my computer more or less safe? Thanks in advance
adaware spybot search and destroy avg hmmm there was some more but.... I can't remember them right now P.S.: girls and informatic don't go well together (sorry, I just had to )
1) WinXP (or Win2K)+servicepacks and patches, Win98 are without support from MS side... 2) AVAST like antivir and simple firewall 3) firewall (kerio, etc...) 4)ad-aware+spybot (both recommened) but servicepacks and patches are #1
My advice would be: Go to a shop and make them repair it. That's a proof of the lot i know about informatics
Go for XP, now it's the only MS system that gets propper support and regular driver updates. If you can get XP with SP2 already, there isn't much you have to worry about in case of worm swarms right from plugging in the Inet. If you will install XP with SP1 or even without it, get necessary patches first while you're still under 98 and I mean it P.S. we do have some girls at the Faculty of Informatics here, but still we have a joke about them "we do let our women program too, therefore we buy them washing machines"
a bit OT: i have winME, dont have any firewalls, any AlwaysWorkingSecurityPrograms, etc just once per 2 weeks checking drivers, using online scaner like MKS (http://skaner.mks.com.pl/skaner.html) or Panda (http://www.pandasoftware.com/products/activescan) result: 0-2 viruses (mainly in cracks which my bro downoload by eMULE) i use Mozilla Firefox i dont use InternetExplorer it seems virus friendly And i couldnt play WB without alt-tab posibility (many times afk, changing music in winamp, reading forum, smoking, shoping etc) so winXP not recomended (keyboard blockade) i hope that somebody help you jefim
If you have at very least 256MB of RAM memory go for WinXP with already Service Pack 2. When you boot for the first time download Mozilla Firefox as a browser, you won't miss Internet Explorer and you'll be a bit safer from viral aggressions. Antivirus: Antivir Personal Edition (it's free and you can choose not to load it on memory everytime) + AdWare or SpyBot Firewall: I liked Kerio 2.1.5 but it's old and unsupported (it's very light on system though). Try Outpost if it's still free. While you are at it, go for another e-mail client (Mozilla Thunderbird maybe?) and avoid Outlook Express. Good luck
I have A+Certification in Computer Repair, this is the deal. Computers are very friendly now. If you do this: 1. XP profesional. Everything else is Beta, dont go there. 2. Format for NTFS and follow the directions. 3. Go directly to windows update site. {last one i did had 83 updates, hope you have highspeed.} 4. They have link for free virus software. Thats it, no more problems Tips: Dont ask anyone or let them mess with your pooter, thats usaly counter-productive. Its better to mess up your pooter yourself then someone else doin it, its yours. And everything you need to know can be found at Windows Knowlegebase. just read, its in there. Enjoy
If you go for XP, get a big HDD. DO NOT trust the info about how much Gigabytes the OS needs... I did that on a computer, and made only 3,5G for OS... hahahahah very funny to use disccleaner once a week. (OK I wasn't the only one using the computer, so more stuff than I had planned got installed on that partition... ) Otherwise XP seems to be ok, I use AVG + Firewall + Spybot S&D + AdAware. If you just progs updated you'd be ok. Good Luck!
Nope, you just have to have a general idea of what a firewall does and open the right port or just allow the program to acces the Internet with no restrictions
3,5GB might be just enough for XP as long as you keep the swapfile somewhere else Win98 grew up when you did something, XP grows by itself...
if you have high speed connection; AND if you installin XP; install your OS without your ethernet cable plugged in.As soon as you have installed wn xp [do not connect your cable] Start up your browser, put http://www.microsoft.com into the URL field, then, just before you hit the enter key, plug the cable in, hit the key then. THEN, go to ms downloads and do your thing. Get all the fuckin security patches you can. Each time the bastard thing tells you to reboot, disconnect the fuckin cables and reboot, then repeat start browser, enter the ms url and do some more patch downloadin... For me, that seems to stop the worm thing right from the get go. or go to NXSecure.org, sign up, wait a half hour, get into the site, find the fuckin sp2 download bootleg and download it. THEN install XP without being connected.
Download a firewall or some antivirus programs, and either put them in a separate partition or burn the programs to disk. When you reinstall, leave your connection cable unplugged until you have installed the anti-virus, adaware programs, firewall etc, connect to the internet, then update your anti-virus, etc programs immediately. This should keep you protected long enough until you install the service packs and stuff.
