I'll get some lw 3d objects source file to start. I think I saw around a page describing exactly how the .lwo is organized. I hope my bookmarks are well organised...
precendent conversion was formed as lw-plugin: and user could save file in both lwo- and ini-formats from lw-gui. however, it's up to you. lw-export or lwo-analyse - any worth.

well... |File|->|summary info| easier for poly count as for max faces its usually easy to rpedict on regular faces: number_of_polys= (number_of_vertices - 2) its number of polygons on single face of course on self made faces its not that simple and polygon count may be bigger thats why when u low poly model sth in max u should start from regular faces (squares, ngons etc) from base max objects (if modeling from geometry and shape objects) cant tell why discreet decided to introduce their own 'face'.. probably to make it easier to edit; difference may be significant:
