If you change the icon from "default" to "plane type" you can see the type of plane that the other sides flies, but only from a short range (D5 I think). Dont know if this is a bug or a feature, so...
Well yes exec.. but if there is going to be other "no plane ID" scenario and this happens it can give to the pilots that use it a fair amout of advantage. If you can tell (using the "plane type" setting) if the plane on your 6 is a yak or a la5 you can make the proper evasive actions for that plane, otherwise you would have to rely on your recognizing abilities to ID the plane (and not everyone can recognize a plane when evading from it) otherwise you can make simple but deadly mistakes. Oh well just my point of view
probably aike misformulated the phrase, probably i misinterpreted. neon subtitle about plane type from d5 is for morons, that could not recognise the aircraft from d7 let them some chance to know out this info, finally sorry, if rough.
