AMX is more deadly to the pilots flying it than to an enemy it's attacking... you never know when it's engine will fail or when it will just drop out of the sky... it's known to be a bit ... buggy greetze, Zembla
Zembla, actually it is quite the opposite. a really good aircraft... even without guided weapons! On Kosovo conflict its performance was awesome (with dumb bombs!!), so good that AMI (Aeronautica Militare Italiana) is running an upgrade program, to have it capable of carrying LGBs, ARMs and other A2G stuff. No wonder why it is the "Pocket Tornado".. As for the engine reliability, it is excellent, although a bit uderpowered for AMX when fully loaded. The Rolls-Royce Spey are very reliable engines. Here in my town lives a (not-virtual) friend who is an AMX pilot with 1500+ hours, he said it very well when he said: once we have it with all systems (Brazilian ones are without radar, upgrade coming on 2006.), it will be the best attack aircraft. Be it for rain forest or desert, enemies will fear its precision an lethality. On more than 10 years operating it (we bought 51 aircraft), our Air Force lost only 3 to accidents.
hmmmm strange, an Italian friend of mine told me that it's very unreliable... but well yeah, it's something like a harrier then I guess... only at half cost and with a bit better precision, though the AV8B Harrier II+ is one of the most precise weapon systems in the world... greetze, Zembla
I would have to say canadain cf-18 fighters are in the top, been flying around 120 of them since 1980's, no losses yet
My favorite plane... definately A-10 / OA-10 Thunderbolt II (Warthog) http://www.fas.org/man/dod-101/sys/ac/a-10.htm http://www.af.mil/news/factsheets/A_10_OA_10_Thunderbolt_II.html IT ROX!!! Recon
