If you've ever tried to run WBFH without administrator rights you'd had got a "Failed to set data for 'DisplayName'". I don't like being administrator more time than necessary. Fortunately, I found a way to "go online" without being in the administrator group, and without using "run as". The explanation is for falcon 4 but applies to WBFH as well: http://falcon.unroutable.net/ (go to "other->running falcon as non-administrator", instructions for W2000 at the bottom of the page) I guess, in the guide, you have to substitute "the falcon 4" directory for "the warbirds directory", but I'm not sure changing permissions for directories is necessary. About the registry key: Thanks to regmon I found the pertinent key. It is HKEY_LOCAL_MACHINE\SOFTWARE\Microsoft\Windows\CurrentVersion\Uninstall\FreeHost Launcher You have to give full control to the group your user is in. Now that I have found a workaround for this problem, I wonder if it's just a bug. Regmon says FHLauncher tries to create this key every time instead of quering it... anyway I'm no expert at all, so you can me. greetings
About letting ppl play WBFH while running on their accounts and not on Administrator account in Win NT4 for Workgroups/server\Win2000Pro\WinXP Pro afi. Thanks Bazura.
saeculas saecurity hi afi, it is also very useful, when you don't want to log in as admin-user (commonly the owner, when you are not on pc-sharing). regarding security it is harder for anyone to 'compromise your computer and gain control over it' when you are 'user without rights'. nice hint, bazura!
Yeah, I think if you know what he is talking about, it's good advice. If, like me, you havent a clue what the f*ck he is gibbering about, then you dont have to worry, cos it doesnt concern you. Basically.... -glas-
Yeah, as soon as I read "fail to set data entry for non administrator uses" i just kinda flew off into la la land.
Bazura: Hey, fucking ace, man! I've been wondering about this behavior myself but was to damned lazy to try and find it out myself. Thanks, dude! We need more threads like this! Wabwab: if you don't understand the topic, don't post in it. OK?
@wabwab, good save man (I mean your edit) @sebbo, when did "not-understanding-topic" ever stop you from posting? (you dutchis douchebag) airfax
@wabwab & others: If you bother: http://www.tames.net/security/win2ksettings.htm specifically, "accounts" section. If encouragement necessary : http://www.tames.net/security/whyshouldi.htm greetings
