Ice hockey is something people from two countries enjoy.
In the beginning it was one whole country, British Canada, and part of another country, the then East Coast of the then nascent USA.

They are not as fanatic about that sport and Canadians. But we up here are busy doing lots of stuff that Yanks don't do so much of either. We haven't built any aircraft carriers, but we like to watch them sail by.
Yankees like to watch some hockey, it is the time they see Canadians excelling at something.
